Intraocular Lens Implants

Visian ICL™ and Verisyse™ Intraocular Lens Implants at Our Practice Serving Sacramento and Roseville

Patients with moderate to severe nearsightedness that renders them ineligible for cornea-based refractive surgery such as LASIK or PRK may benefit from treatment at Meister Eye & Laser Center. By implanting advanced lenses designed to work in harmony with the eye’s natural lenses, Dr. Richard Meister restores distance vision in his patients so that they can clearly see objects both close up and far in the distance. These implantable lenses are called phakic intraocular lens implants. Located near Sacramento and Roseville, our practice offers two types of phakic IOLs for nearsightedness: Visian ICL™ and Verisyse™.

Visian ICL™

The Visian ICL™ is a type of phakic intraocular lens (IOL) which is also called an implantable Collamer® lens (ICL). It is placed behind the iris to correct moderate to severe nearsightedness. Those who are unable to receive LASIK vision correction due to myopia may opt for Visian ICL™ implantation as an alternate way to reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses or contacts.

The Visian ICL™ is so named because it is an implantable Collamer® lens. Collamer® is a biocompatible collagen copolymer material that transmits light much like the natural human crystalline lens. Because this lens has a high water concentration on its surface, less light is reflected, resulting in fewer irregularities. Glare, halos, and irritation are reduced for improved vision quality.

Verisyse™

Patients who are very nearsighted may have corneas that are so thin that LASIK should not be used to improve vision. Instead, nearsighted patients can reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contact lenses with a phakic IOL such as Verisyse™. Verisyse™ was approved by the FDA in 2004 and has improved the vision of hundreds of patients with myopia who are unable to undergo LASIK surgery. This lens is placed in the eye behind the cornea and supplements the focusing power of the existing natural lens. Most patients recover from this surgery in a few days. The Verisyse™ lens is permanent, but can be removed or replaced if necessary in the future.

The Verisyse™ phakic IOL does not correct astigmatism yet. Those with astigmatism may opt for thin lenses or LASIK surgery to fine-tune their vision after Verisyse™ intraocular lens implants have been placed. Sacramento and Roseville-area surgeon Dr. Richard Meister can determine if you have astigmatism in addition to nearsightedness at an appointment.
