Presbyopia Treatment
Presbyopia Treatment Including ReSTOR®, Crystalens®, and ReZoom™ near Sacramento
Most people over the age of 40 experience a stiffening of the eye’s lens which causes difficulty focusing on objects both far and near. This condition is known as presbyopia and has been treated with reading glasses or bifocal lenses in the past.
Today’s advanced ophthalmology techniques provide new options for presbyopia treatment, including crystalens®, ReSTOR®, and ReZoom™ IOLs. At our Sacramento-area practice, Meister Eye & Laser Center, an intraocular lens or IOL can be surgically implanted into the eye to provide excellent close and distant vision. Besides considerably improving your vision, IOLs treat cataract formation. Please contact Dr. Richard Meister to learn if this type of presbyopia treatment is appropriate for you. Located near Sacramento in Citrus Heights, Dr. Meister can provide you with advanced treatment for presbyopia, cataracts, and other vision problems.
ReSTOR® Intraocular Lens Implants
Those with cataracts and other vision problems may benefit from implantable ReSTOR® intraocular lenses. ReSTOR® lenses are multifocal, meaning they improve both far and near vision to reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses and contact lenses. This advanced multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) works by mimicking the eye’s natural ability to accommodate, or quickly change focus, to see at a wide range of distances in different types of light. The ReSTOR® IOL is notable for the excellent near vision it provides. Patients who undergo presbyopia treatment with ReSTOR® seldom need to use reading glasses after surgery.
After Dr. Meister and the patient have decided ReSTOR® is the ideal presbyopia treatment during a consultation at our Sacramento-area vision center, they will schedule a surgery appointment. When the patient arrives on the scheduled date, his or her eyes will be treated with anesthetic eye drops to minimize discomfort. The lenses will be removed with extreme precision and replaced with ReSTOR® lens implants. In most cases, the patient will feel nothing more than slight pressure during the operation. The patient will be instructed to rest after returning home. The next day, Dr. Meister will check the patient’s eye to be sure the lens has been implanted well and will continue to heal properly. Most patients do not need to wear glasses or contact lenses after implantation of ReSTOR® lenses for presbyopia treatment. An experienced Sacramento-area surgeon such as Dr. Meister can complete the procedure so carefully and efficiently, it will likely take no longer than a half-an-hour to complete, yet patients enjoy the benefits for a lifetime.
Crystalens® is an FDA approved intraocular lens implant which arches and flexes to provide optimal vision at every distance. The flexing action of Crystalens® is made possible by a durable and flexible hinge within the lens.
In this procedure, the natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced with Crystalens® at our Sacramento-area office. Crystalens® mimics the eye’s natural ability to focus on objects which are both close and far away. Before surgery, anesthetizing eye drops are placed in each eye. The natural lens is removed through a tiny incision in the cornea and the Crystalens® implant is gently inserted to replace it. Patients may feel slight pressure on the eye, but the procedure is not painful. Once Dr. Meister completes the surgery, more eye drops will be placed in the eye and the patient will be instructed to relax for the remainder of the day. Within 24 hours, patients should return for a follow-up visit at which time Dr. Meister will examine the eye. In a few days, the patient should notice an improvement in his or her distance vision, and within a month, middle and near vision will be significantly better as well.
If you suffer from cataracts or presbyopia, Crystalens® may be a good option for you. A clinical study found that 98 percent of those who received Crystalens® implants could drive without glasses or contact lenses after the surgery.
Some intraocular lens implants are monofocal, meaning they only provide good distance vision. With these types of implants, reading glasses will still be necessary to view objects and read text close-up. In contrast, ReZoom™ is a multifocal lens which improves your ability to see in five different focusing zones for optimal vision in a variety of distances and light conditions.
During the procedure, Dr. Meister will make a tiny, precise incision in the patient’s cornea after anesthetizing the area with eye drops. The natural lens will be removed and replaced with ReZoom™ multifocal lens implants. Patients typically feel only slight pressure during the procedure. After a six to 12 week adjustment period, most patients experience a vast improvement in vision as a result of the ReZoom™ multifocal lens technology.
Surgery that involves replacing the eye’s natural lens with an IOL instead of reshaping the cornea is known as PRELEX® surgery. PRELEX® surgery can change the lives of those who have impaired vision with high levels of nearsightedness or farsightedness. If you would like to reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses and contact lenses, but your corneas are too thin for LASIK surgery, PRELEX® by Dr. Meister can restore your vision and improve your quality of life.
Dr. Meister can perform a wide range of procedures for presbyopia treatment using IOLs such as Crystalens® and ReSTOR®. Contact our Sacramento-area practice to schedule a consultation.
